DIABETES AND ITS TYPES

In today’s world, 1 in 5 people have Diabetes. It has been seen that the rate at which the percentage of people who are becoming diabetic has been increasing at a rapid pace. This is happening because of the change in lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits of people. But what does it mean when it is said someone has diabetes? It means that the pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin, or any at all, or when your body isn’t responding to the effects of insulin properly. If the pancreas is not making enough insulin, the glucose gets stored in the bloodstream, which causes high blood glucose levels which causes hyperglycemia, which leads to heart diseases, nerve damage, and eye issues in the future. Diabetes can be kept in control with the help of medication and diet, but it must be managed lifelong.

Diabetes is of 3 types, namely type 1 Diabetes, type 2 Diabetes, and Gestational Diabetes. Type 1 Diabetes occurs in children at birth or at an early phase in their life. People with Type 1 Diabetes are prescribed Insulin to control their sugar levels. Type 2 Diabetes is developed in young, middle-aged adults or old aged people. Medication, insulin, or a combination of both can help manage type 2 diabetes. It has been seen that by following the doctor’s prescription and diet, diabetes can be reversed. The third type of diabetes, which is Gestational, happens during pregnancy for women and it goes away after the baby is born. But there are chances of becoming Diabetic at a later stage in life. There are also cases where a person becomes diabetic during pregnancy; which later develops into type 2 diabetes.

The ways one can minimize the chances of one becoming Diabetic is to eat healthy, exercise, and maintain a routine to have the minimum number of hours of sleep required by a person and get regular health check-ups done.
